The Elements of Story Maps

A story map helps children retell the story when they want to.

There are icons, symbols or pictures on the map that indicate the sequence, events, as well as the children’s understanding of the words being used.

How to make story maps effective:

  1. Keep the map simple, bold and clear.
  2. Only use icons, symbols or pictures for key events.
  3. Story maps can be in colour or black.
  4. Try to use colour to make different words or sections of a story stand out for children to remember them better.
  5. Remember: You can go along and elaborate story maps once the children are used to them.
