JINS Discipline Policy Guidelines

The Guidelines:

• Setting out appropriate classroom boundaries and  expectations at the beginning of the year and ensuring they are adhered to
• Using Positive reinforcement of caring, sharing attitudes and behaviours.
• Modelling acceptable behaviour and guiding children through a negotiation process where they feel that their input has been recognised.
• Teachers making decisions based on their knowledge of the child which will include consideration of their developmental stage.
• Encouraging children to take responsibility for their actions and recognise the consequences through discussion.
• Children will be encouraged through verbalisation to recognise and validate their feelings and emotions.
• Children will be in clear view of staff at all times.
• Physical punishment by staff WILL NOT be used to discipline a child.
• When “time out” is being used, children are to be in “time out” within the classroom for periods of no longer than 1 minute directly proportional to the child’s age.
• Discussions about behaviour will focus on the unwanted behaviour not the child.
