Initial Screen – Conversation and Listening (FS1)

Initial screens are to be completed once children have settled in.

1. Each screen is divided into 3 bands; Delayed ○ Developing ○ Competent
2. If children don’t have all the skills in a band, you don’t move onto the next band.

• Children who have all the skills in Bands 1 and 2 and at least 1 skill from Band 3 are classified as Competent
• Children who have all the skills in Band 1 and at least 1 skill from Band 2 are classified as Developing
• Other children are classified as Delayed and should work on Getting Started instead of Conversation Skills

1. A skill should only be credited if they are using it confidently, competently and consistently.

 Format of interventions:

• Objectives are chosen from the checklists, and this becomes the focus of the week, e.g. ‘To keep to a topic’

The chosen objective needs to be included on your weekly planning as well as your chosen vocabulary.

Frequency of interventions:

• Delayed – Daily
• Developing – 3-5 times weekly
• Competent – Targeted during whole class sessions and small group work
