2.2 Talk for Writing in the Curriculum: The Three I’s
Through Talk for Writing children learn language through 3 simple phases. These are known as the 3 I’s.

Lets look at Imitation
- This involves children learning and retelling stories and poems as children hear and remember the vocabulary.
- Children pick up words they hear that are memorable or meaningful. Children do not remember and understand words that are not emphasised as these become just sounds rather than powerful labels that can be used to order and organise their world.
So how do we make story telling memorable?
Take a moment to think about how you would make a story memorable for a child and write down your answers on the next page (Quiz).
